REI Round Rock Second Gen Green Store To Use 48% Less Energy

REI Round Rock Green Prototype

Mounting on the green building success of their previous stores, including the green Boulder REI we wrote about previously, REI today opens the doors to its second generation of green prototype store in Round Rock, Texas. The Texas store is projected to consume 48% less energy than a typical store and generate a portion of its power from a solar panel installation, building integrated photovoltaics, and a solar hot water system. After that, Round Rock will rely on Solatubes to displace a portion of articifial lighting and the purchase of green power generated from biomass digesters.

Study: Extending time of stroke drug treatment OK (AP)

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Stroke sufferers can still benefit from clot-busting medicine even if they receive it an hour or so beyond the current three-hour window after symptoms start, an important new study suggests.

The finding could potentially extend treatment to thousands more people each year and prevent many from being left disabled. However, it does not change long-standing advice that stroke victims seek immediate help if they feel sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg.

“Don’t wait,” said Dr. Larry Goldstein, director of Duke University’s stroke center and a spokesman for the American Stroke Association. “If you think you are having symptoms, call 911.”

The study by European doctors found that the clot dissolver could safely be given up to 4 1/2 hours after the start of symptoms. Results were published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Stroke is the nation’s No. 3 killer and the leading cause of disability such as paralysis or speech loss. More than 700,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year and more than 150,000 die. The most common strokes result from a blood clot blocking an artery supplying blood to the brain, starving brain cells of oxygen.

The best treatment is giving patients the drug TPA to break up the clot and open the artery. A large federal study in 1995 showed that people fared better when given the drug within three hours of the start of a stroke. Beyond that, studies have shown the drug can raise the risk of dangerous bleeding in the brain and may not be as effective.

However, only about a third of stroke victims seek help that fast, and fewer than 5 percent get TPA now. Some doctors have been trying to push the time limit, and the new study is the largest and most rigorous to test that approach.

Doctors randomly assigned 821 stroke patients in Europe who were not treated within three hours to receive an intravenous dose of TPA or a dummy drug up to 4 1/2 hours after symptoms started.

Doctors levitra kaufen found those given TPA fared better — 52 percent survived without major disability compared with 45 percent of the others. The drug group had more cases of bleeding in the brain — 27 percent versus 18 percent. However, it was serious in only about 2 percent. The death rate was similar in both groups.

The study was funded by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., which markets TPA as Actilyse overseas. TPA is sold in North America by Genentech Inc. as Activase.

Lunch Whistle Review: Morimoto

From Serious Eats: New York

20080923-morimoto-intro.jpg

Serious Eater’s Note: Periodically we’re going to review lunch at serious restaurants all over New York. Lunch at these restaurants tends to be overlooked, is generally much cheaper, and in many cases doesn’t require 30 days of precise military-style action to secure a reservation. So today’s Lunch Whistle tweets about Morimoto.

By night Morimoto is a jumble of stylized images. When the dinner bell rings at six, impossibly thin and gorgeous men and women dressed in all black Armani convene to eat sushi, drink sake, and flaunt their stylish hipness at every opportunity. The place practically begs to be a location for Gossip Girl (and for all I know it already has been).

But at lunchtime viagra bestellen, Morimoto becomes a relaxed, comfortable contemporary Japanese restaurant serving big plates of reasonably priced food made with top quality ingredients. It’s a brisk fifteen minute walk from Serious Eats World HQ, so it has served as one of my go-to business lunch pots. Best of all, you can walk right in without a reservation—even if you’re not wearing black designer duds.

It helps to have some guidance when ordering lunch at Morimoto, because if you let your eyes wander to the more expensive items on the lunch menu, you can spend a fortune without even thinking about it.

So how should a serious eater attack the lunch menu at Morimoto?

Go with the bento boxes and the rice bowls is my first piece of advice.

20080923-morimoto-bento.jpg

The bento boxes contain a ridiculous amount of food. Each one contains little individual boxes and/or compartments of standard miso soup with big, beautiful pieces of cloud-like tofu, a fine mixed green salad with a an astringent kabosu vinaigrette, doughy, crispy tempura with an improbably delicious and decidedly non-Japanese blue cheese dipping sauce, a few pieces of fresh, sprightly sushi and sashimi, and a small portion of meat or fish.

20080923-morimoto-kobebeef.jpg

The Kobe beef box ($27) was terrific. The little dish of sweet and spicy kobe beef shards exploded with flavor. There wasn’t a lot of beef in the portion, but there didn’t need to be, because of all the other food in the box.

Cody dancing with the stars

20080923-morimoto-cod.jpg

Almost as good was the roasted black cod box ($24). The cod was satiny and ultra-rich. It was lacquered with a sweet brown glaze that would be a great color for an Armani suit.

20080923-morimoto-vegetarian.jpg

Eggplant parmesan and vegetarian sushi.

The vegetarian box ($19) was a bit of a letdown. The main component was a dish of eggplant parmesan (what, you didn’t know that eggplant parm is a traditional Japanese dish?) that was an awful chunky mess. Someone in the Morimoto kitchen needs to go to eggplant parm school. But again, even without the eggplant parm there was enough food in the vegetarian box to feed two comfortably.

20080923-morimoto-chirashi.jpg

The rice bowls were just as substantial in their own way. The chirashi bowl ($32) featured slices of ultra-tender yellowtail, golden-eyed snapper, and tuna, all cooked ever so slightly, plus daikon and myoga (a cross between a shallot and an onion) sitting on top of sushi rice.

Palin won’t cooperate with ‘tainted’ probe

Monday, September 15th, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will not cooperate with a legislative investigation into the firing of her public safety commissioner, the McCain-Palin presidential campaign announced Monday, accusing supporters of Democratic rival Barack Obama of manipulating the inquiry for political motivations.

Gov. Sarah Palin is fighting allegations she improperly tried to force the firing of her former brother-in-law.

Gov. Sarah Palin is fighting allegations she improperly tried to force the firing of her former brother-in-law.

Former Palin Press Secretary Meg Stapleton told reporters in Anchorage that the investigation has been "hijacked" by "Obama operatives" for the Democratic presidential nominee — namely, Alaska state Sen. Hollis French, the Democratic lawmaker managing the investigation and an Obama supporter. French has denied working on behalf of the Obama campaign.

The Obama campaign described Stapleton’s charge as "complete paranoia." It has denied sending campaign staff to Alaska to work with the legislative committee’s investigation.

Mobius strip

McCain campaign spokesman Ed O’Callaghan said Palin will not cooperate with "that investigation so long as it remained tainted and run by partisan individuals who have a predetermined conclusion," referring to a comment by French earlier this month that the case could produce criminal charges or an "October Surprise" for the GOP ticket.

Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, is battling allegations that she and her advisers pressured then-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire a state trooper going through a bitter custody dispute with her sister — and that Monegan was terminated when he refused. Palin says she fired Monegan over budget issues and denies wrongdoing.

Monegan has said that while no one directly demanded Trooper Mike Wooten’s dismissal, he felt pressured to do so by Palin, her husband and staff. He said he believes his refusal to fire the trooper led to his own firing. Upon the dismissal, Monegan was offered a position as executive director of the Alcohol Beverage and Control Board, but turned it down.

Palin’s lawyers say the investigation — which the Legislature commissioned on a bipartisan basis in July — belongs before the state Personnel Board, which met to consider the request Thursday. On Friday, Alaska lawmakers voted to subpoena Palin’s husband, several aides and phone records in their investigation.

Don’t Miss

Stapleton said Palin’s attorneys have turned over to the board e-mails that contain "new information that exonerates Palin and proves Monegan’s egregious insubordination."

Monegan allegedly worked against Palin over his department’s budget, making repeated requests to acheter cialis Congress "for funding that was out of line for every other commissioner and agency," she said.

"The final straw came in late June, when Commissioner Monegan arranged for another unauthorized trip to D.C. to request levitra more money from Congress," Stapleton said.

The campaign also disputed recent comments Monegan

Checkout Line: Meat of the matter

By Lou Bendrick

In Checkout Line, Lou Bendrick cooks up answers to reader questions about how to green their food choices, and other diet-related quandaries. Lettuce know what food worries keep you up at night.

unshackled pass over: more sizzle than steak?

Hi,

Something I’ve been pondering a lot lately is the whole “free-range” meat market. After reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma, viagra I have a lot of doubts as to whether meat labeled “all natural” and “free range” is actually those things. On the one hand, I want to support the market for sustainably raised meat, but on the other I want to be sure I’m getting what the label says and not factory-farmed animals. So, any advice? Am I better off avoiding meat all together? Help!

Martine,

Given all the eco-labels out there, some of them downright sleazy, you just don’t know what you’re getting when it comes to casual encounters with meat. Because you’ve read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, it’s evident that a smart lady like you is looking for a deep, meaningful relationship with food. (Momma always said you’d be better off finding true love in the library than in a bar.)

First things first: “All natural” and “free range” are tired, corny lines, so roll your eyes when you hear them. It’s as if a guy in a bad suit and a cloud of Jovan Musk had just said, “Call me milk; I’ll do your body good.” Meat market, indeed!

It is equally acheter cialis unlikely that “all natural” meat will do your body good. “Natural” is merely marketing frou-frou, with no official certification and little oversight behind it. Although natural meat and poultry cannot contain artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives and it may only be minimally processed, it still may come from a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) that would make Upton Sinclair gag.

In terms of misleading labels, I consider “free range” another bad actor. It applies to poultry and means that the birds must have “access” to the outdoors — but as Pollan showed in The Omnivore’s Dilemma — it doesn’t ensure that they actually spend time outside. Free-range poultry or eggs might very well come from birds that never stretched their legs or saw the sun.

If you want to support sustainably raised meat, I’d suggest that you go local. Go to farmers’ markets and look for small-scale farmers who treat their animals and the earth — and therefore you — with dignity. To find out whether their meat is worth your time or respect, you will have to ask questions. If at all possible, pay a visit to a local farm where you’d like to buy meat and see first hand how the animals and the land are treated. To find local and sustainable meat, try the following resources: You can plug your zip code into Sustainable Table’s “Eat Well Guide” and LocalHarvest’s database. The Eatwild directory will help you find meat from animals that actually spent time outside grazing on pasture. For chicken, also try the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association.

Although some grocery stores and co-ops are starting to carry local and sustainable meat, it might be hard to find. It is likely that you’ll have to ferret out and reject the meaty equivalent of the smarmy guy on the barstool — the lump of CAFO chicken loudly proclaiming that it’s “hormone free.” Federal regulations prohibit commercial growers from feeding hormones and steroids to any chicken, so claiming that your chicken is “hormone free” is like a man claiming to understand women because he had a mother.

If local and sustainable options aren’t available and you still want meat for dinner, you might employ a process of elimination. When I’m in this bind, I look for the USDA certified organic label, which at least guarantees that the animals receive feed free of certain chemicals, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and drugs (organic code also stipulates that cows get “access to pasture” and chickens have outdoor access, but those rules have been interpreted liberally).
