Microsoft May Be Repeating Vista Mistakes with Windows 7

in the world of technology, success is linked to perceptions. microsoft demonstrated its multi-touch technology in a windows 7 demo at the d: all things digital conference this week, and the software giant may possess hoped to overcome the perception that apple owns touchscreen interfaces. instead, some observers are wondering if microsoft is making the same mistakes that now plague windows vista.

“We are always looking for new ways to deliver great experiences for our customers,” Chris Flores wrote on the Windows Vista blog. “This is especially true of Windows — where we’re constantly examining trends in hardware, software and services to ensure that we continue to drive the innovation.”

Copying Apple

But Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at JupiterResearch, is among those who are scratching their heads about Microsoft’s moves this week. He has one overarching question after viewing the demo: Is Redmond making the mistakes it made with Vista all over again?

“Some of the mistakes Microsoft made with Vista were talking up the next version of Windows way too early, showing off features out of context with the rest of the operating system,” Gartenberg said. “The second mistake was focusing so much on multi-touch.”

Apple didn’t invent touchscreen technology. In fact, Microsoft was working on the concept long before Apple publicly demonstrated its efforts. However, touchscreen technology has become almost synonymous with Apple and the iPhone, Gartenberg said, and he wonders why Microsoft is showing off a feature that makes the company appear as if it is copying Apple instead of innovating on its own.

“Yes, Microsoft wants to recapture the notion that Apple didn’t invent multi-touch, that they have their own implementation of it, but is that really the right way to go about this?” Gartenberg asked. “It’s a perception issue. It makes Microsoft look like it is chasing after Apple. Microsoft probably…

Boxford’s McCourt prepares for international Special Olympics in 2009

In the case of the subject of this story, we’re not dealing with a tribe of Native Americans or a punk rock-related hairstyle.

In figure skating, the Mohawk is “a turn … that involves a change of foot but not a change of edge. It can be done on either inside or outside edges,” according to the Web site www.wikipedia.org.

This is the move that 17-year-old Elizabeth McCourt, of Boxford, wants to work on and perfect before she reaches the Special Olympics World Winter Games in February of 2009.

“I’m working on crossovers and spirals … and the Mohawk,” said Elizabeth. “I’m looking forward to going to the games and learning and having new music. It’s very exciting. I work very hard with [personal coach] Geri Finlay.”

Elizabeth has intellectual disabilities, according to her mother, Caroline.

“Her specific condition is without a diagnosis, so it is called an intellectually disability with significant learning disabilities,” she says.

With all Elizabeth does, it’s hard to imagine that she has any disability. It certainly doesn’t stop her from enjoying life to its fullest, whether it’s a three-day hike in the White Mountains, swimming at her highest level or working with horses at Windrush Farm in her hometown.

“We knew that she had a disability, so it was always a matter of looking for ways to improve her coordination, to stay active, to be healthy,” says her mother. “From a very young age, we had her in swimming lessons. Team sports were kind of out of the question. But she does roller-skating; she is a pretty good downhill skier. There are all kinds of programs to serve these kids.”

Elizabeth will be comfortable participating at the World Special Olympics in Boise, Idaho, because she’s been on blades since the tender age of 5, but Finlay says she still has a lot to learn about the sport a dozen years later.

“Elizabeth is pretty much a beginning skater. She took lessons with non-special needs kids for many years, and it didn’t work out too well for her,” says Finlay, a Malden resident. “She didn’t get the individual attention, and a lot of bad habits were formed that I had to un-form and re-form.”

Shet skated for years with a group in North Andover, but her disabilities affected her attention span, which further affected her ability to learn with the group.

“It was totally different,” says Elizabeth. “Now it is just me. I like working with [Finlay]. It’s a lot more fun. I get a lot more attention from Geri than with a group.”

Elizabeth is competing in Level 2 out of six levels (with Level 1 being a beginner level) at the Worlds. She and Finlay are both fully committed to her improvement.

“She works very hard; she comes every week; she seldom misses a lesson,” says Finlay. “When she’s [at practice], she works. I’ll have to call her attention back to me, but I don’t take that as her not wanting to be there. I take that as her disability.

“I say, ‘Elizabeth, look at me.’ I’m used to doing that,” Finlay says. “I have a son with Asperger’s syndrome [a form of autism], and I’ll have to say, ‘Michael, I’m talking directly to you now.’”

The big trip

Michael Finlay is also going to Boise to compete in the men’s Level 6 skating competition. Elizabeth McCourt finished second in the Feb. 29-March 2 Special Olympics State Games, which ensured her a spot in the lottery to go to the World Games, beating out the state’s first place finisher in Level 2, 17-year-old Mary Willant.

Along with going to the World Games in February, McCourt will be assigned to a Special Olympics coach (most likely one other than Finlay) in Denver, where all U.S. athletes for the World games will train for a week.

“I haven’t been on a plane by myself before,” says Elizabeth. “I’m excited about Denver, it’s my first trip by myself. It’s a good idea to go with a different coach — I want to learn different things.”

She will be traveling with chaperones and other athletes, including Everett’s William Holbrook, 22.

While she seems to be improving at Level 2, Finlay still sees some work that needs to be done before she gets up to Level 3.

is this not the most beautiful facsimile ever? welcome to kentucky…the “bluegrass state”. i lived here for multifarious years before i got married, this is home to me. my parents moved to a different village (elizabethtown ky) the year i got married (1999) and then recently moved to arizona (where they were born and raised). it’s been about three years since i have been servants’ to kentucky and to almost ten years since i attired in b be committed to been home to “berea”….my town. i have missed it terribly and when my parents moved back west, a part of me was left wondering “where’s residence?”. it’s absolutely where ever they are, but a staggering party of me is lull in kentucky and always will be. my little brother nathan and his adorable the missis maggie viable within a mile of lexington ky. it was so much as a lark to see them and hang out. they were fabulous host and feed us really good! on our trip there they develop out they are having a little girl the first of october, congratulations! mark’s sister lindsay (from va) has wanted to do a kentucky trip since she got back off her mission. most people know that lindsay served her lds mission in kentucky and introduced mark and i. so we have a connection that goes back to where we met in “berea ky” in 1998. finally after all these years we were able to time a trip back home together and meeting up. fortunately we induce teensy-weensy girls the same life-span almost. this made it fun and interesting.

what a good pal. nate came prepared for kentucky spring poorly. it poured the night i arrived. what a sweet social relations he has.

little miss couldn’t figure this animal out. she supplementary it wasn’t a cat and had no fear of it for some reason. this is “bill the bunny”. nate has had him for a scattering years now and has potty trained him and he even takes him on a walk with a leash, funny! he is a good bunny and poor junk got some serious lovings from her. i caught her in his enclosure one simply sitting in it trying to pet him.
